DynaGreen Environmental UK Ltd:

Comprehensive Trace Gas Monitoring Services for Landfill Sites
Welcome to DynaGreen Environmental UK Ltd, a trusted provider of environmental monitoring and consulting services throughout the United Kingdom. Our mission is to help businesses and governmental entities maintain the highest environmental standards by offering innovative and reliable solutions. One of our key areas of expertise is Trace Gas Monitoring for landfill sites, an essential service for ensuring environmental compliance, protecting public health, and mitigating the impacts of landfill operations on the environment.
Landfill sites are a critical component of waste management, but they also pose significant environmental challenges. The decomposition of organic waste in landfills generates various trace gases, some of which are potent greenhouse gases and others that can pose health risks if not properly managed. Effective monitoring and management of these trace gases are crucial for minimizing environmental impact, ensuring regulatory compliance, and safeguarding communities near landfill sites.

At DynaGreen Environmental UK Ltd, we provide comprehensive Trace Gas Monitoring services tailored to the specific needs of landfill sites. Our services include the detection, measurement, and analysis of trace gases based on Environmental Agency guidance document LFTGN04, such as methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We also offer advanced data analysis, reporting, and consulting services to help our clients implement effective mitigation strategies and comply with regulatory requirements. In addition to these regulations, the Environment Agency provides detailed guidance LFTGN04 on landfill gas monitoring, including recommended monitoring techniques, frequencies, and reporting requirements.

Understanding Trace Gas Monitoring

What Are Trace Gases?
Trace gases are minor components of the atmosphere that are present in small concentrations but can have significant environmental and health impacts. In the context of landfill sites, trace gases are primarily generated by the decomposition of organic waste under anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions. The most common trace gases associated with landfills include:
Methane (CH₄):
A potent greenhouse gas that is generated during the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. Methane is flammable and can pose explosion risks if it accumulates in confined spaces.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂):
Another greenhouse gas that is produced alongside methane during waste decomposition. While less potent than methane, carbon dioxide contributes to global warming and climate change.

Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S):
A toxic gas with a characteristic rotten egg smell. Hydrogen sulphide can be harmful to human health even at low concentrations and is corrosive to equipment and infrastructure.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs):
A diverse group of organic chemicals that can be harmful to human health and contribute to air pollution. VOCs are often found in trace amounts in landfill gas.
The Importance of Trace Gas Monitoring at Landfill Sites
Effective trace gas monitoring is essential for several reasons:
Environmental Protection:
Trace gases like methane and carbon dioxide are significant contributors to climate change. Monitoring these gases helps landfill operators minimize their environmental impact and contribute to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Public Health and Safety:
Some trace gases, such as hydrogen sulphide and certain VOCs, can pose serious health risks to workers and nearby communities. Monitoring ensures that these gases are kept at safe levels, protecting public health and safety.

Regulatory Compliance:
In the UK, landfill operators are required to comply with stringent environmental regulations that govern the emission of trace gases. Regular monitoring helps ensure compliance with these regulations, avoiding potential fines, legal action, and reputational damage.

Operational Efficiency:
Monitoring trace gases can also help landfill operators optimize their operations. For example, methane can be captured and used as a renewable energy source, reducing the site’s environmental footprint and providing a potential revenue stream.
Regulatory Framework for Landfill Gas Monitoring
Landfill gas monitoring in the UK is governed by several key pieces of legislation and guidance, including:
The Landfill Regulations 2002:
These regulations set out the requirements for the management of landfill sites, including the control and monitoring of landfill gas emissions.

The Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016:
These regulations require landfill operators to obtain a permit that specifies the conditions under which the site must be operated, including requirements for gas monitoring and control.

The Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994:
This legislation includes provisions for the monitoring and control of landfill gas to protect the environment and human health.

In addition to these regulations, the Environment Agency provides detailed guidance on landfill gas monitoring, including recommended monitoring techniques, frequencies, and reporting requirements.

Our Trace Gas Monitoring Services

At DynaGreen Environmental UK Ltd, we offer a comprehensive suite of Trace Gas Monitoring services designed to help landfill operators meet their regulatory obligations, protect the environment, and ensure the safety of their operations. Our services are tailored to the specific needs of each landfill site and include the following:
Trace Gas Sampling
Trace gas sampling will be performed, in singular, from the fuel gas inlet with analysis for components identified in table 1.1 of the Environment Agency LFTGN04 guidance note. These analyses would be performed by sub-contract UKAS laboratory.

Dual bed ATD tube will be used for all organic species (trace gas suite) with analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
Aldehyde components will be measured by DNPH impregnated tubes with analysis by HPLC-UV.
Arsenic will be sampled onto filtered activated charcoal solid sorbent tube and analysed by ICP.
Hydrogen sulphide and bulk gas will be measured by dedicated MCerts Geotech GA5000 analyser and/or analysis after capture into a tedlar bag.
At DynaGreen Environmental UK Ltd, we are committed to helping landfill operators manage trace gases effectively and responsibly. Our comprehensive Trace Gas Monitoring services are designed to ensure environmental compliance, protect public health, and optimize landfill operations.
